The Coimbra Group is pleased to offer young researchers an opportunity to carry out part of their research work and spend a short stay at Coimbra Group University. Applicants from Sub-Saharan countries are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The Coimbra Group aims to increase co-operation amongst its members by enhancing special academic and cultural ties and creating channels of information and exchange.

The main aim of this scholarship programme is to enable scholars to undertake research in which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them to establish academic and research contacts.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for young researchers to carry out part of their research work and spend a short stay at Coimbra Group University.

Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in all disciplines.

Scholarship Award: Scholarships covers according to the university:-
Aarhus University (Denmark): The university will cover the costs of reasonable accommodation and food (€1500 per month) + reimbursement of travel expenses up to €1000 + reimbursement of expenses for fees to Danish authorities for obtaining a visa and/or work and residence permit (if required) corresponding to the current level of fees.
-University of Barcelona (Spain): Scholarship of €1500 per month will be awarded.
-University of Geneva (Switzerland): Scholarship of 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs) per month will be awarded.
-University of Granada (Spain): Scholarship of €900 per month + health insurance + reimbursement of travel expenses up to €800 will be awarded.
-University of Graz (Austria): Scholarship of €1000 per month + reimbursement of travel expenses up to €600 will be awarded.
-University of Groningen (The Netherlands): Scholarship of €1190 per month (to cover housing and other expenses) + reimbursement of travel costs up to €1250 + health insurance (about €40 per month) will be awarded.
-Jagiellonian University of Krakow (Poland): Exemption of tuition fees + free accommodation in the JU dormitory
KU Leuven (Belgium): Scholarship of €1600 per month will be awarded.
-University of Padova (Italy): Scholarship of €950 per month + reimbursement of travel expenses up to €950 will be awarded.
-University of Pavia (Italy): Scholarship of €150 per week + board and lodging + travel costs (economy class) + health insurance policy will be awarded.
-University of Poitiers (France): Scholarship of €1000 + travel stipend up to €700 will be awarded.
-University of Salamanca (Spain): The University will provide accommodation and food.
-University of Siena (Italy): Scholarship of €1000 per month + free board and lodging + accident insurance + public liability insurance will be awarded.

Scholarship can be taken at: Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Italy and  France.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this scholarship:-

-under the age of 45  nationals of and current residents in a country in Sub-Saharan Africa
-current staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa of doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status.
-A limited number of grants are available for technical/administrative staff from African universities (please see the requirements of each individual university). In most universities the language of instruction is that of the country itself, but in most universities it is possible to use English as the working language.
-Female candidates are encouraged to apply and will be prioritized.

Nationality: Applicants from sub-Saharan countries (Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Democratic Republic), Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must be current staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa of doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status.

Supporting Material: In addition to the application for the scholarship, the applicant must submit the following documents:-
-Applicants should provide the name and contact details of an academic supervisor in the receiving Coimbra Group University who will supervise their work during their stay abroad. If you do not have any contacts, we suggest you visit the website of your chosen institution or get in touch with the contact person whose email address is indicated in the brochure. The Coimbra Group Office is not in the position to provide assistance in this.
-All applicants are requested to provide a letter/e-mail of acceptance (to be submitted together with your application) written by the head of the academic supervisor or administrative unit of the host university where you would like to carry out the proposed working plan. The letter should state that the supervisor is willing to work with you in case you obtain a Coimbra Group Scholarship.
-Applicants can select one institution only. Multiple applications from the same candidate will be rejected.
-Please fill in your application form only when you have all the data available (i.e. name of and letter of acceptance by supervisor at Coimbra Group University, etc.). Incomplete applications will be rejected, no exceptions will be made.
-The dates of your stay should be agreed upon between the applicant and the academic supervisor at the Coimbra Group University. Typically this will be during the academic year 2016/2017.
