Eligibility:-The project is an industrial CASE and open to UK, EU and International students. Candidates with a background in Materials Science and Engineering are preferred, with physics also an option.

-The PhD will give the successful candidate a strong background in science led R&D and train the student in a broad skills base of analytical techniques as well as developing a portfolio of soft-skills to encourage communication and knowledge transfer.

Scholarship Description: The project concerns the study and development of glass compositions for use as enamels on automobile windscreens. The student will undertake glass melting and casting and perform enameling studies to study the effect of the coating on strength of the enamel/glass composite. Strain will be quality assessed using polarized light and quantitatively evaluated using nano indentation and acoustic tests. The interface between the enamel and windscreen glass will be studied using advanced transmission electron microscopy. The student will work closely with JM and be expected to undertake short study visits at JM Sonning to perform critical experiments and to liaise with the industrial sponsor. The Department of Material Science & Engineering in the University of Sheffield, with over £80M in research income over the past decade, has an established reputation for world class research that spans metallurgy, electroceramics, polymer composites, advanced manufacturing, glass technology, bio materials, nuclear materials and functional materials. As part of the Faculty of Engineering, we contribute to the third largest engineering faculty (by research income) in the UK and have a culture of interdisciplinary research and cross faculty research groups.
