Swansea University is inviting applications for applied analytical science (LCMS): fully funded MRes studentship. Candidates should have or expect to obtain a first class or upper second class BSc degree in physics, engineering, chemistry and/or a closely related subject. The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax free stipend anticipated to be £10,130 p.a. International students will be expected to pay the difference between UK/EU fees and international fees. There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.  The application deadline is 14 August 2015.

Eligibility: –Candidates should have or expect to obtain a first class or upper second class BSc degree in physics, engineering, chemistry and/or a closely related subject.
-Applicants should also be able to demonstrate extensive practical capability in laboratory based work, or equivalent industrial experience or research through a final year research project.
-These scholarships are open to UK/EU and international students, but please note that only the UK/EU fee level will be covered. International students will be expected to pay the difference between UK/EU fees and international fees.

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for an MRes research project entitled ‘Development and Feasibility of a Flowing Atmospheric Pressure Afterglow (FAPA) Discharge Ionisation Source as part of a Commercially Available Multi-Modal ‘Universal’ Ionisation Source Platform.’ This studentship will be based at the Institute of Mass Spectrometry, Swansea University Medical School. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career, working in the Institute of Mass Spectrometry and within wider industry. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers at the Institute (Dr Ruth Godfrey and Professor Gareth Brenton) and at the research and development facilities of a leading international developer of commercial mass spectrometers. This is a collaborative research team who are developing mass spectrometry instrumentation at their facilities at Swansea and in North West England. Both collaborators have an extensive track record and facilities to design instrumentation and develop prototypes that can be tested for commercial applications.
