The University of Tasmania’s is offering free online for Understanding Dementia. This  Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a 9-week online course that builds upon the latest in international research on dementia. Anyone can enroll for this course. The next offering will start August 17, 2015. The syllabus of the program is specially draws upon the expertise of neuroscientists, clinicians & dementia care professionals in the wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. Application Deadline is 31st of August 2015.

Course Introduction

Understanding Dementia is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), offering university-quality education about the latest in dementia research and care. The free 9-week course provides an opportunity to engage with the perspectives of an international community, without requiring exams or assignments.

Understanding Dementia is designed to be accessible and appealing to people from diverse backgrounds including:
-Health professionals
-Community and residential facility support staff
-Health policymakers
-Social scientists
-People in the early stages of the disease, their families and carers
-Individuals with a general interest in dementia

Understanding Dementia addresses the foremost issues surrounding dementia, providing avenues for discussion and rich global networking opportunities to engage with this major international health issue. The course imparts knowledge to improve quality of life across the trajectory of dementia for people with the condition, their families and their carers.

The course runs for 9 weeks total, but will remain open for an extra two weeks to enable participants to complete. To obtain the most from this experience, participants should expect to spend approximately 3 hours per week (for 9 weeks) completing the course activities. After completing the final quizzes for all three units of the course: ‘the brain’, ‘the diseases’ and ‘the person’, participants will be eligible to download a free certificate of participation, as well as a record of the notes that have been taken throughout the course.

You Will Learn

The course imparts knowledge to improve quality of life across the trajectory of dementia for people with the condition, their families and their carers. Participants in the Understanding Dementia MOOC will gain an increased knowledge of dementia, including its causes, symptoms and ways of responding to the needs of people living with the condition. The aim of this fully on-line course is to improve the quality of life of people living with dementia, their families and carers. Participants will learn about the brain, the diseases causing dementia and the person experiencing the condition, and have the opportunity to engage with a community of like-minded participants from across the globe.
