University of Texas Online Course on Data Visualization & Infographics

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin because of the grand success of last session again offering an online course on Data Visualization and Infographics with D3. This course has a limited number of students and is paid. This six-week course will cost US $95.00. The first 50 registrants will receive a full ebook copy of Interactive Data Visualization for the Web by Scott Murray for free. This course provides deep knowledge about the principles of infographics and data visualization and also clears the concept of its application to the real world. Applicants can apply by creating an account. This is part of JournalismCourses.org, the distance-learning program of the Knight Center for Journalism. The course session is from August 17 to September 27.  It will look at this powerful JavaScript library for manipulating documents based on data.

Course Introduction

This is part of JournalismCourses.org, the distance-learning program of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin. Our program offers MOOCs, massive online courses that are free, and other online courses, like this one that has a limited number of students and is paid. All participants will receive ebook copies of the introduction and first two chapters of Alberto Cairo’s books, The Functional Art, and the upcoming The Truthful Art, due out in 2016. Students will learn how to display information using charts, maps, diagrams, and visual narratives, and how to bring them to life using d3.js, a Javascript library, which is quickly becoming a standard in visualization for communication.

The online course is hosted in English at JournalismCourses.org, the distance learning program of the Knight Center. It will be taught by two experts with extensive experience in data visualization who are also authors of reference books in the field. Included in this fee is the cost of the certificate of participation in PDF form, which will be issued by the Knight Center after verification that a student has met the minimum requirements at the end of the course. The certificate, however, does not count for any credit or academic accreditation.

You Will Learn

By the end of the course, you will learn:
– how to work with graphics to communicate and analyze data
-basic introduction to HTML, CSS, SVG and JavaScript
-how to generate visual elements from data using the D3.js
-to make the best graphic choices for the data, among other practical lessons
