Technical University of Denmark is offering a PhD scholarship for a project on Design and Modeling of Concentrated Solar Power Plants focusing on Dynamic Performances. Strong skills and a great interest in engineering thermodynamics are essential. Previous experience with numerical simulation work and programming is a great advantage. The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years. The application deadline is September 6, 2015.

Study Subject(s): Scholarship is awarded in Design and Modeling of Concentrated Solar Power Plants focusing on Dynamic Performances.
Course Level:
Scholarship is available for pursuing PhD research program at DTU Mechanical Engineering.
Scholarship Provider:
Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Denmark, KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and Aalborg CSP
Scholarship can be taken at: Denmark

Eligibility: Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. Strong skills and a great interest in engineering thermodynamics are essential. Previous experience with numerical simulation work and programming is a great advantage. Moreover, previous experiences with thermodynamic modelling of concentrated solar power plants and dynamic performance modelling are considered additional qualifications. Applicants must have great analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. Furthermore, fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is important.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Technical University of DenmarkThis PhD scholarship is available for Danish applicants.

Scholarship Description: Technical University of Denmark, Department of Mechanical Engineering and KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, have recently started up a collaboration project within the Nordic Five Tech alliance. In addition to these two universities, Aalborg CSP, which is one of the world leading companies in boiler systems and technologies for concentrated solar power, is a partner of the project. The main objective of the project is to derive cost-effective concentrated solar power plants with transient performances superior to state-of-the-art. Currently they have an opening for a PhD position at DTU Mechanical Engineering within this project. In the PhD project, new steam generator designs based on a design derived by Aalborg CSP will be investigated, targeting faster ramp rates and reduced start-up and shut-down times. Detailed numerical models will be derived and validated using data provided by manufacturers. By the use of these models, improved designs and control strategies will be derived. Moreover, detailed thermo-economic analyses will be conducted combining the solar field, the power block and the storage systems in order to develop novel control strategies to maximize the revenue, thereby reducing the overall cost of electricity production.

Number of award(s): There is a PhD scholarship available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Duration of award(s): The period of employment is 3 years.

What does it cover? The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.
