Scholarship Description: Department of Nuclear Medicine and PET Center, Dept. of Clinical Medicine, HEALTH, Aarhus University is offering a PhD fellowship commencing 1 February 2016 or as soon as possible hereafter. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is associated with abnormal formation of extracellular deposits (plaques) of the protein beta amyloid and intraneuronal tangles of tau protein. Risk factors for AD include age, a family history, and certain susceptibility genes though most cases have no known cause. The pathology of AD is also associated with brain inflammation. For the past two years at Aarhus we have been imaging cases who have isolated memory problems but are still able to live independently (mild cognitive impairment) to determine how often amyloid and tau aggregation and inflammation (microglial activation) can be detected in these subjects and how these pathologies are temporally and spatially related to each other. The MCI cases have also had MRI to determine whether microcirculatory changes are present and a full cognitive evaluation. These cases are now due to return two years after their initial psychological aseessment and PET imaging for follow up studies. The aim of the PhD project on offer is to re-evaluate these cases with imaging along with new cases in order to determine the rate of change of early Alzheimer pathology in life and to correlate such changes with levels of cognitive ability.
