Doctoral Dissertation Visiting Research Grants for Greek Students in USA, 2016

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece is offering two partial doctoral dissertation research grants for Greek students to conduct full time research at universities or research centers in the United States. Fulbright grants are awarded for periods of four (one semester) or of six months. The grant period may begin as early as September 15, 2016 and must be completed by May 31, 2017. The deadline for recommendation and registration is January 15, 2016 and electronic application submission deadline is February 12, 2016.

Study Subject(s): This program supports projects and activities that recognize and promote the critical relationship between educational exchange and international understanding, in addition to the intellectual merit of the proposals.
Course Level: Grants are available to conduct fulltime research at universities or research centers in the United States.

Eligibility:
-Greek citizenship and a valid Greek passport. Candidates with dual citizenship (U.S./Greek) or permanent residence in the United States are not eligible.
-Officially enrolled at a Greek university as a Ph.D. candidate and have completed a minimum of 1 year of research at the time of the application and a maximum of 4 years. The candidate needs to remain a student in good standing at his or her institution throughout his or her grant period.
-Applications for study and research should be made while candidates are in correspondence with specific institutions concerning affiliation and financial support. No awards can be confirmed until candidates have submitted an official affiliation letter and written evidence that they will dispose of adequate funds to carry out their plans in the United States.
-Dissertations cannot be completed in the US but will need to be finalized in Greece and submitted to the home institution.
-Official letter of affiliation from the U.S. university/research center which will include an invitation from the Project Director and/or the professor with whom the applicant plans to work endorsing the applicant’s visit to the U.S. institution and stating that the proposed project can be completed within the time frame specified. US institutes must declare if there are minimum funding requirements for hosting research fellows.
-Excellent command of the English language.
-Candidates must have completed a cycle of education beyond the secondary level (BA/MA) at a recognized institution, with outstanding academic results. The first degree must have been obtained from a Greek university (AEI) with a grade point average (GPA) of 8.0/10.00 and above or a degree from The American College of Greece with a GPA of 3.4/4.0 and above.
-Students may propose research for 4 or 6 months. The fellowship may not be renewed and extensions are allowed only for exceptional circumstances.
-Maintain satisfactory progress in the conduct of his or her research;
-Devote fulltime research on the approved topic; engagement in any gainful employment during the fellowship period is not allowed. This includes on-campus employment such as teaching assignments;
-Preference will be given to candidates below the age of 35 at the time of application.
-Preference will be given to candidates whose country of permanent residence is Greece.
-Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have not had substantial recent experience in the United States.
-Candidates in the United States at the time of application are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Greek citizens are eligible to apply.

Scholarship Description: The Fulbright Foundation in Greece will award 2 partial grants (depending on available funding) to Greek doctoral students to conduct fulltime research at universities or research centers in the United States (Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher). Fulbright grants are awarded for periods of four (one semester) or of six months. The grant period may begin as early as September 15, 2016 and must be completed by May 31, 2017. The grant period cannot be divided and may be conducted at a maximum of two universities or research centers. Applications may be submitted only if applicants have received an official letter of invitation or admission from an educational institution in the United States. This program supports projects and activities that recognize and promote the critical relationship between educational exchange and international understanding, in addition to the intellectual merit of the proposals. Applications with broad multiplier effects are welcome, as are projects that are conducive to candidates’ sharing of their experiences and knowledge with colleagues and students in the host country (US) and upon return, in Greece. This award is not for candidates seeking a degree.

What does it cover? 
-Monthly maintenance allowance of up to U.S. $2,000. The final grant amount depends on the availability of funds.
-Round trip travel allowance according to Fulbright Travel Policies & Regulations.
-Limited health and accident insurance (for grantee only). All participants will receive the Department of State’s health insurance coverage (A+SPE) of $50,000 with $25 co-pay per medical visit for the duration of the program. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Some US universities demand that you enroll in their health insurance plan. Make sure to inquire whether there will be any additional cost.
-Pre-departure orientation session.
-Participation in the Annual Awards ceremony.
-Fulbright Certificate of Award.
-J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa sponsorship

Selection Criteria: Important factors for the selection of candidates are: good standing at the home institution, academic excellence, career potential, civic engagement, personal qualities/abilities to serve as a cultural ambassador for Greece.

Notification: Interviews are conducted in English and are mandatory. A Fulbright Selection Committee will interview all candidates, in person, on specific dates. All candidates will be informed of their interview appointment (time and date) with the Selection Committee by email. SKYPE and e-mail interviews will not be considered.

How to Apply:
Step 1. Registration: Registrations are by invitation only, either from the Fulbright Foundation or through recommendation of a professor/supervisor. Applicants are solely responsible for their own affiliation in the United States and verification of fees and costs required by the US host institution. The online registration forms will be made accessible for those candidates that have received an invitation and following approval of the Fulbright Foundation. Once submitted, your registration form will be automatically available to the Fulbright Foundation/Greek Program Coordinator for a first review. You will receive a confirmation email in the days following your submission.
Step 2. Online Embark Fulbright Application Procedure: Following successful registration and approval of eligibility, applicants will be given a link to complete the online Embark Fulbright application in English. Applications which have been submitted without prior registration will not be accepted. When you begin your application, the system will ask you to confirm that you are eligible for this award. The Fulbright Foundation accepts only online Embark Applications. Faxed or e-mailed or mailed copies of applications will not be accepted.
