Fully-Funded PhD Studentship at Sussex Computer Human Interaction Lab in UK, 2015

University of Sussex is offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship as part of the ERC SenseX project lead by Dr Marianna Obrist. The successful applicant will be part of the Sussex Computer Human Interaction Lab (SCHI /sk??/ Lab) at the University of Sussex. The studentship provides £14,057 tax free stipend plus UK/EU fees waiver. International applications are welcome but please note that the fee waiver offered only covers fees at the UK/EU amount (currently £4,052). The application deadline is 30 September 2015.

Eligibility: International applications are welcome but please note that the fee waiver offered only covers fees at the UK/EU amount (currently £4,052). Applicants will be expected to cover any shortfall between that and the fee rate for overseas students. Applicants should have a strong undergraduate or Masters Degree in computer science, HCI or a related discipline.

Scholarship Description: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research is only starting to uncover the fine granularity of tactile stimulation and experiences, but is still in its infancy of the discovery and exploration of taste as interaction modality. This PhD project will study the interplay between touch and taste stimulation and explore their integration for specific use scenarios such as to enhance multimedia experiences. The PhD will contribute to the generation of a multi-sensory experience design framework. Applications are invited for this fully-funded 3.5-year PhD studentship as part of the ERC SenseX project lead by Dr Marianna Obrist. The successful applicant will be part of the Sussex Computer Human Interaction Lab (SCHI /sk??/ Lab) at the University of Sussex, which is integrated in the Creative Technology research group established within the School of Engineering and Informatics.

Selection Criteria: Applicants will be able to demonstrate an interest in multisensory technology and novel interaction techniques, moving beyond audio-visual interfaces, together with very good programming and mathematical modeling skills. Previous experience working with sensory technology (e.g., haptics systems), electronics, and basic experience with physiological measurements is desirable.
