Stockholm University invites applications for a PhD position in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW). The project addresses the molecular mechanisms by driving pathogen invasion of polymicrobial communities. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The application deadline is 20 August 2015.

Eligibility: Graduate studies in molecular biosciences requires a completed university degree at an advanced level and education corresponding to at least 240 Swedish credits (hp), including at least 120 hp in molecular biology, biology, chemistry or similar and complementary subjects. Candidates should have successfully completed courses at an advanced level in molecular biosciences (60 hp), of which 30 hp represent independent research project work. Candidates should have successfully completed courses at an advanced level in molecular biosciences (60 hp), of which 30 hp represent independent research project work. Applicants who have at least 180 Swedish credits (hp), including at least 90 hp in molecular biology, biology, chemistry or similar and complementary subjects, are also eligible up until June 30, 2015.

Scholarship Open for International Students: stockholm-universityApplicants from Sweden are eligible for this PhD position.

Scholarship Description: Research at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) experimentally addresses fundamental problems in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. State-of-the art and advanced methodologies are applied in a professional research environment characterized by its well-established international profile. The institute has 30 research groups with a research staff of 170, of which 55 are PhD students. This position is available in the laboratory headed by Dr. Klas Udekwu. The project addresses the molecular mechanisms by driving pathogen invasion of polymicrobial communities. In line with current understanding of the impact of commensal microbial community composition and stability on host health, the project aims to deduce and quantitate those mechanisms behind community establishment and stability, and how antibiotics affect them. The project involves the mathematical and experimental probing of population dynamics and requires pre-requisite understanding of basic microbiological and ecological methods.

Number of award(s): There is a PhD position available in the Department of Molecular Biosciences.

Duration of award(s): The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Selection Criteria: The successful applicant will be selected based on documented theoretical and experimental knowledge relevant for the area of study, knowledge of scientific theory and method, analytical skills, personal motivation and team working skills. Well-developed English language skills are required. The applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents that substantiate qualifications, e.g., knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. References and interviews will be used to assess qualifications of the applicants.
