2016 TATE Doctoral Research Position on New Approaches to the Conservation of Contemporary Art, UK

Applications are invited for doctoral research position at TATE. This position is offered on a fixed-term contract for 3 years (starting January 2016) to those who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to taking up the position. An appointment to this post will be made at £24,000 per annum (pay award pending). The deadline for completed applications is 21 October 2015.

Eligibility: You will be in the first four years of your research career and not yet awarded a doctoral degree. You must not have lived, studied or worked in the UK for more than 12 months in the last three years. Your master’s degree in law, museum studies, conservation, art history, social sciences, or similar will be matched by the ability to work independently, think creatively and write clearly in English. Excited by the chance to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team, you will be comfortable in an international interdisciplinary environment. Your experience and the quality of your master’s level thesis will make you stand out.

Scholarship Description: This is your chance to be part of a prestigious research and training programme – a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network coordinated by Maastricht University. As one of 15 PhD researchers across Europe, you will contribute to addressing fundamental questions concerning the nature of modern and contemporary artworks and the consequences for their conservation and collection. The network will establish frameworks for international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and training collaboration. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an initiative to educate a new generation of professional curators and conservators.

What does it cover? This post is graded on Band 4L of the Tate pay scales. An appointment to this post will be made at £24,000 per annum (pay award pending). In addition according to the Marie Curie Innovative training network scheme the candidate will be eligible for an additional annual mobility allowance of approximately £650 and, if eligible, a further family allowance of £1,450 per annum.

Notification: Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place on 6 November 2015. If you are invited for interview, you will be asked to submit a three page research plan.

-A certified copy of your Master certificate and list of grades (with certified translation for languages other than English, Dutch, German or French);
-Evidentiary support: Non-native English speakers or applicants who have their MA degree in a language other than English must have one of the following language qualifications: pass the Academic IELTS (minimum score: 7.5) or TOEFL Internet-based test (minimum score: 113)
-Additionally you must arrange for the following: Two academic references must be received by the deadline for the application to be eligible, Candidates are responsible for instructing referees to submit their references directly to John McNeill, Collection Care Research Manager at john.mcneill-at-tate.org.uk.
