The Anglia Ruskin University invites applications for PhD studentship to undertake research on childhood obesity prevention during pregnancy. The position is for a full-time student commencing study in January 2016 with an annual £15,000 stipend plus fees paid at UK/EU rates (currently £4,350 per annum) for 3 years. Non EU overseas applicants are welcome to apply but are required to pay the difference between the UK/EU tuition fees and International fees. The application deadline is 2 November 2015.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree awarded by a UK University, or an overseas Master’s of equivalent standard, provided that the Master’s degree is in an appropriate cognate area (psychology, public health, nursing science) and that the Master’s degree included training in research and the execution of a research project.

Scholarship Open for International Students: UK/EU and international applicants are eligible to apply for this studentship.

Scholarship Description: PhD is the traditional route to a doctorate, in which a period of research is undertaken and then published in a thesis. When studying towards a PhD an in-depth research study is required to answer one or more research questions. Completion of the doctorate will identify that you are an expert in your field and will demonstrate a proven ability to problem-solve and to perform original research at a very high level contributing to the existing body of knowledge within your own specialist field. This PhD will explore the feasibility of preventing childhood obesity during pregnancy. You’ll be encouraged to consider exploring barriers and facilitators to behaviour change amongst pregnant women who are obese and/or midwives and other health professionals. They are also interested in understanding how overweight and obesity amongst midwives and health professionals impacts on their ability to raise the issue with pregnant women. You’ll have a good understand of theories of behaviour change and the UK NHS. You’ll be expected to work autonomously to explore the literature, design and undertake the research.

Duration of award(s): Studentship is awarded for the duration of 3 years. Applicants will be expected to undertake up to 6 hours teaching each week during term time.
