In order to undertake a program of study here at the University, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English.
Course Level: These awards are open to students worldwide for full- and part-time, campus-based doctoral research in the College of Arts and Law.

List of Subjects: Arts and Law, African Studies, American and Canadian Studies, Antiquity, Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, Drama and Theatre Arts, English Language and Linguistics, English Literature, History, History of Art, Law, Modern Languages and Cultures, Music, Philosophy, Theology and Religion
Scholarship Award: The awards also include £11,000 support per year towards living expenses for full-time applicants, adjusted pro-rata for part-time applicants.

College Admission Requirement [Course Admission Requirement]:
Entrance Requirement: Postgraduate applications from candidates offering a range of overseas qualifications. As well as achieving appropriate grades in your examinations, you also need to submit official transcripts of your qualifications translated into English and showing the subjects and grades obtained.
Test Requirement: Not Required
English Language Requirements: In order to undertake a programme of study here at the University, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English. You can demonstrate your level of English with IELTS/TOEFL/PTE or alternative qualifications. The sections below will tell you what grades you need in these qualifications for the subject area you want to study.
Supporting Material: When you apply for a postgraduate programme via course finder , you will have the option to upload your supporting documents. The following information will usually be needed before a decision can be made on your application:
-Two academic references (or if appropriate to the programme applied for, one could be from your employer).
-Degree transcript(s) – originals or certified photocopies:
-EU and international applicants – if you are currently studying outside the UK or have obtained your qualification(s) outside the UK
-UK applicants – if you are currently studying in the UK or have obtained your qualification(s) in the UK and your university provides transcripts. If you are not a recent graduate send certified copy(s) of relevant qualifications. University of Birmingham graduates do not need to provide transcripts or copies of degree certificates, however we advise applicant’s who graduated prior to 2000 to provide copies of their qualifications as they may take longer to verify.
-Certificate to show competency in the English language, if English is not your first language and you have already taken a test (See English language requirements ).
-Personal statement, approximately 5000 characters, explaining why you are interested in studying on your chosen programme. Alternatively, you can type this within your application.
-You may also be required to submit further documents e.g. a sample of work or research proposal in support of your application. If this is necessary for a decision to be made on your application, the document will become a mandatory part of your application.
How to Apply: Applicants who have already applied for AHRC funding through the Midlands3Cities consortium will automatically be considered for one of these College awards, without submitting a separate application.
