VLIR-UOS  is offering up to 8 PhD scholarships for EEA Nationals. These scholarships are available for pursuing doctoral training programme at a Flemish university.

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students and professionals in Flanders and the South. It helps to strengthen higher education in the South and the globalisation of higher education in Flanders.

VLIR-UOS supports partnerships between universities and university colleges, in Flanders and in the South, looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges.

The candidate should have a very good command of the English language. Therefore, the application should be written in English.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing doctoral training programme at a Flemish university.

Study Subject: Research subject which is relevant for the development of one of the 14 partner countries in which the Belgian non-governmental development actors may operate as from 2017 onwards and for which VLIR-UOS has a country strategy: Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador and Peru.

Scholarship Award: VLIR-UOS awards a research allowance to the research unit of the supervisor at the Flemish University which amounts to € 156,25 per month of scholarship granted. This research allowance is granted at the beginning of the PhD scholarship period for the entire PhD period granted (for instance: € 7.500 in the case of a 48 months scholarship). In case of premature termination of the scholarship, the research allowance for the scholarship period which has not been taken up needs to be reimbursed pro rata the remaining months.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following guidelines:
Nationality and affiliation: The PhD candidate must hold the Belgian nationality or the nationality of an EEA member state, and be affiliated to a Flemish university.
Degree: The present call is open to graduating students as well as graduates, but subject to the following conditions:
-At the start of the PhD scholarship (i.c. 1st October 2016), the candidate must hold an academic qualification (Master’s degree) at least ‘with distinction’ or equivalent. This qualification does not have to be procured by a Flemish university but the equivalence of foreign diplomas of higher Education has to be recognized4 by the latter.
-The graduation (at least ‘with distinction’ or equivalent) from the last Master cannot be more than five years before the start of the scholarship (the calendar year counts, i.c. 2016). This means that applicants for the present call should have graduated from their last Master in the year 2011 or later.

Nationality: EEA nationals can apply for these PhD scholarships.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: The candidate must hold a certificate of the Flemish university for admission to a doctoral training programme at that university before signing an agreement with VLIR-UOS when selected.

Test Requirement: No

English Language Requirement: The candidate should have a very good command of the English language. Therefore, the application should be written in English.

PhD Scholarships

Supporting Material: In addition to the application for the scholarship, the applicant must submit the following documents
-Application form: The application form (max. 10 pages, mandatory format, annex 1) refers to the selection criteria and their definition and descriptors as stated in VLIR-UOS selection system – policy and guidelines.
-Sworn Statement The applicant should include a sworn statement concerning earlier remunerated work and/or PhD scholarships at any Belgian university (mandatory format, annex 2).
-Planning: The applicant should include a detailed planning stating the milestones and timing of activities over the entire period the scholarship would cover (free format).
-Short CV’s: The applicant and the (co)supervisor(s) should add a curriculum vitae. Each CV only contains information which is relevant to the proposal, and is therefore two pages at most. All CV’s should be compiled into one pdf-file (free format).
-Recommendation letter: Both the supervisor in the Flemish university, the co-supervisor in the partner country and, if applicable, any other co-supervisor(s) should provide a recommendation letter for the applicant (free format).

How to Apply: Proposals must be submitted to the ICOS of the Flemish universities electronically.

-KU Leuven: May 27, 2016
-University of Antwerp: June 13, 2016 (1pm)
-Ghent University: May 27, 2016
-Hasselt University: June 3, 2016
-Free University Brussels: June 6, 2016
