Durham University is delighted to announce the introduction of 100 Postgraduate Taught Scholarships worth £3,000. The scholarships are open to applicants from currently under-represented groups within the postgraduate taught population.
The majority of taught master’s programmes are eligible, except postgraduate diplomas, postgraduate certificates, MRes programmes, integrated masters and courses funded by other public bodies (e.g. PGCE).
The main objective of the university is to provide high quality, comprehensive educational and training opportunities that are compatible to changing needs of the students.
Durham University accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency (CPE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as preferred English Language proficiency tests.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing Postgraduate programme.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in diverse fields of study. The majority of taught master’s programmes are eligible, except postgraduate diplomas, postgraduate certificates, MRes programmes, integrated masters and courses funded by other public bodies (e.g. PGCE).
Scholarship Award: A minimum of 20 scholarships will be awarded for one year (full-time), two years (part time pro rata). Each scholarship has a value of £3,000. Awarded against tuition fees with the remaining balance payable by the recipient.
Scholarship can be taken in the UK
Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be progressing from an undergraduate course charged at the higher tuition fee rate of up to £9,000, introduced 2012/13;
- Have a household income level of £42,620 or below, in the final year of undergraduate study either 2014/15 or 2015/16. (As assessed by Student Finance England or equivalent)
- Studying full time or part time;
- Domiciled in the UK or European Union (EU) (Classified as Home/EU for tuition fee purposes);
- Do not already hold a masters level qualification; and
- Be from a group that is evidentially under-represented within the institution’s taught master’s population (See indicators of under-representation).
Indicators of under-representation
Applicants must also meet one or more of the following criteria to under-representation within the institution have taught masters population:
- Applicants are resident in an area where higher education participation is amongst the lowest in the UK.The University will use the ACORN Classification and will base the assessment on the permanent address provided as part of your application for a postgraduate taught programme. Permanent address defined as the home address where the student normally lives when not at university, for example, their parents’ home or marital home. ACORN categories 4 and 5 are deemed to be areas of low participation. If you are resident in an EU country we will look at the representation of your country within the University.
- Are classified as aCare Leaver. A “Care Leaver” is defined as someone who was in the looked after system on their 16th
- Assessed as having a disability
- Definition of disability under the Equality Act 2010
- You are disabled under theEquality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a “substantial” and “long-term” negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities
- What “substantial” and “long term” mean
- “substantial” is more than minor or trivial – e.g. it takes much longer than it usually would complete a daily task like getting dressed
- “Long-term” means 12 months or more – e.g. breathing condition that develops as a result of a lung infection.

Nationality: In order to be eligible applicants must be domiciled in the UK or European Union (EU) ((Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK)). The scholarships are open to applicants from currently under-represented groups within the postgraduate taught population.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirements: Applicants must be progressing from an undergraduate course charged at the higher tuition fee rate of up to £9,000, introduced 2012/13.
English language Requirements: The University accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency (CPE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as preferred English Language proficiency tests.
Test Requirements: Preferred Tests: IELTS: 6.5 (no component under 6.0); TOEFL iBT (internet based test): 92 (no component under 23); Cambridge Proficiency (CPE): Grade C; Cambridge Advanced (CAE): Grade A; Cambridge IGCSE First Language English at Grade C or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]; Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language at Grade B or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]; GCSE English Language at grade C or above and Pearson Test of English (overall score 62 (with no score less than 56 in each component)).
