Applications are invited for The Westpac Bicentennial Foundation research fellowship in Australia. The fellowship is open to all Australian citizens or permanent residents who meet the eligibility criteria.

The foundation aspires to be independent both academically and financially, elevated in the different aspects of knowledge and to link the programs and research it offers with the requirements of permanent development in Australia .

The foundation believes the best way to advance Australia over the next century is to invest in the next generation of leaders: the gifted visionaries, the bold reformers, and ambitious innovators.

In order to be eligible applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. between 1 September 2010 and 1 September 2013, or have obtained an Eligibility Exemption from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) or the equivalent of the host university.

Course Level: Fellowship is available for pursuing research.

Study Subject: Applicants proposed research must be in a field of research at a participating university with an Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) four digit Field of Research (FOR) rating of 5 (“well above world standard”). Applicants proposed research must contribute to the future of Australia in one of the Foundation’s priority funding areas: technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties or enabling positive social change.

Scholarship Award: Applicants will receive a full-time salary plus on-costs at the salary level determined by their host university for a maximum of three years. Applicants will receive up to $30,000 for professional development via a Westpac Professional Development Fund administered by the host university over the three years of their fellowship. The final value of their Westpac Professional Development Fund will be determined as part of their Fellowship application.

Eligibility: The foundation is looking for Australia’s best and brightest. To be eligible to apply:

  • Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. between 1 September 2010 and 1 September 2013, or have obtained an Eligibility Exemption from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) or the equivalent of the host university.
  • Their proposed area of research must be in a field of research at a participating university with an Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) four digit Field of Research (FOR) rating of 5 (“well above world standard”).   • Applicants must commence your research by 30 June 2017.
  • Their proposed research must contribute to the future of Australia in one of the Foundation’s priority funding areas; technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties or enabling positive social change.
  • Applicants proposed research must include international opportunities which will develop their leadership skills and global networks, such as; study tours for the purpose of research, attending a short course or conference, an internship or volunteering.
  • Applicants must supply two letters of reference, one academic reference, and one personal reference as well as a letter of support from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) or equivalent. Refer to the supporting document templates on the website for further information.
  • Applicants must be able to attend one of the National Assessment Centres to be held in Sydney:
  • Session 1:  24-25 November 2016
  • Session 2:  12-13 December 2016
  • The Westpac Bicentennial Foundation will nominate which date they will attend and advice of date allocated when finalists are selected. Travel and accommodation cost to be covered by the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation.

Nationality: The fellowship is open to all Australian citizens or permanent residents who meet the eligibility criteria.
