The Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex is pleased to offer a 3-year Clemens N. Nathan PhD Scholarship for an outstanding doctoral candidate wishing to pursue a research project in the field of history and culture of German-speaking Jewry. UK, EU and Overseas applicants are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

This scholarship aims to assist high achieving and highly motivated international research scholars at the University of Sussex.

The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution near Brighton, in the south of England. Its goal is to deliver teaching and learning programs that are informed by current research are attractive to students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and which deliver skills for life.

If applicant’s first language is not English or applicants have not recently completed a degree in an English-speaking country, they will normally be expected to have passed an appropriate test in English, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), successfully pass university’s Pre-sessional English course or have a qualification that confirms their English level.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing Ph.D. program.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded for a candidate wishing to pursue a research project in the field of history and culture of German-speaking Jewry. Highly motivated current and prospective graduates with an outstanding academic record and a strong interest in the relevant topics are encouraged to apply. While diverse fields of investigation are currently open, we encourage projects in the following areas:

The complex spectrum of German-Jewish experience

  • History and memory, with special emphasis on the second and third generation
  • Jewish identity and the question of assimilation
  • Human rights and the refugee question
  • Israel studies
  • Holocaust education

Scholarship Award: Scholarship is 3 years Ph.D. funding covering UK/EU fees (overseas students to pay the difference in fees) & stipend (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16).

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this scholarship:
Applicants will be expected to hold a Master’s degree.

Nationality: UK, EU and Overseas applicants are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must normally have an upper second-class undergraduate honors degree or other professional qualification or experience of equivalent standing. For research degrees in the arts or social sciences, normally also a Masters degree.

English language Requirements: All teaching at Sussex is in the English language and you must, therefore, be sufficiently fluent in English to be able to benefit from their education. If applicant’s first language is not English or applicants have not recently completed a degree in an English-speaking country, they will normally be expected to have passed an appropriate test in English, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), successfully pass university’s Pre-sessional English course or have a qualification that confirms their English level. If applicants do not have evidence of appropriate English language ability at the point when they apply, this will normally form part of the conditions of any offer.

Test Requirements: There are three different levels of English required for postgraduate study at Sussex, depending on your chosen course. In terms of IELTS, the standard requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each section. However, for some degrees, there is a higher-level requirement of IELTS 7.0 overall, with not less than 6.5 in each section and, for courses in mathematics and physics, a lower requirement of IELTS 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in each section.

How to Apply: The mode of application is online. Please include the following in the application:

– Research proposal (2,500-words). Guidelines on what to include in a research proposal are available from the History department WebPages

– a statement of purpose (500-words);

– a copy of their MA diploma;

– two letters of recommendation.

Application Deadline: Application deadline is 15th August 2016. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at the beginning of September 2016.
