The Finnish National Agency for Education is offering scholarships for kindred peoples. The scholarships are intended for postmaster’s level students or researchers who carry out postmaster’s level studies or research at universities in the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia.
Finnish National Board of Education and Centre for International Mobility CIMO merged at the beginning of 2017. Together, they now are Finnish National Agency for Education. The Finnish National Agency for Education awards and administers scholarships for students, researchers, and teachers.
Applicant must know any of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia and study Finno-Ugric languages.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to carry out post-Master’s level studies or research at universities in the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to study the subjects offered by the university.
Scholarship Award: The scholarship period is up to 12 months and the amount of the scholarship is 1 500 €/month. One person can receive a grant for a maximum period of 12 months, however, the grant period can be continuous or in several parts. The Finnish National Agency for Education does not award a separate grant for travel or other expenses.

Eligibility: The scholarships for kindred peoples are intended for post-Master’s level students and researchers who
- Carry out post-Master’s level studies or research at universities in the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia,
- Who reside in Russia and know any of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia, and study Finno-Ugric languages.
Nationality: Students from Russia are eligible to apply.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have previous degree.
Test Requirement: No
English Language Requirement: Applicant must know any of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia, and study Finno-Ugric languages.
How to Apply: A department of a Finnish university, museum or linguistics institution, which has Finno-Ugric linguistics as one its fields of specialisation, will apply for the scholarship for kindred peoples on behalf of the individual. The scholarship candidate should contact the host university about the application in good time before the intended scholarship period and send them:
- A research plan (2 to 3 pages; introduction, goals, work plan, work methods, expected results)
- CV, including information about previous studies, publications, previous visits to Finland
- A copy of degree certificate.
The Finnish host university will send the application form with annexes to the Finnish National Agency for Education. The Finnish National Agency for Education will send the decision about the scholarship to the applicant university.
Application Deadline: There are two application deadlines per year: the 1st deadline is on April 15 and the 2nd on September, 30.
