Applicants are invited for DAAD Research Grants-Cotutelle Doctoral ProgramThese grants are awarded to highly qualified doctoral candidates and graduates who have admission to a doctoral program at the time they begin their grant-supported research.
The aim is to promote bi-national doctoral degrees at the home university and at a university in Germany according to the so-called “cotutelle” procedure); after the degree is successfully completed, the German university and partner institution abroad usually award the doctoral degree jointly.
The German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD is the largest German support organisation in the field of international academic co-operation.
Course Level: Grants are available to pursue Doctoral programme.
Study Subject: Grants are awarded to highly qualified doctoral candidates and graduates who have admission to a doctoral program at the time they begin their grant-supported research.
Scholarship Award: Grants will cover the following:
- Monthly stipend for doctoral candidates in Germany: EUR 1,000.
- Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance.
- Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding.
- One-time research allowance.
- Travel and accommodation expenses according to the German Federal Travel Expenses Law for supervising university teachers for one trip of up to 10 days.

Scholarship can be taken in Germany
Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:
- US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- Foreign nationals who live in the US/Canada by the time of application deadline must have gained their last degree in the US/Canada or will be gaining it before the beginning of their funding period.
- All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office.
- Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline.
- If you are a German national, you must have been residing in the US/Canada for 6 continuous years at the time of the application deadline. Please call our office to make sure you are eligible.
Nationality: US and Canadian applicants or permanent residents are eligible to apply.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have previous year degree.
English Language Requirements: Applicants must be fluent in English.
How to Apply: The application takes place online through the DAAD portal. Your reference has to be sent by e-mail to gradscholar-at-daad.org and by post to the DAAD New York office:
- Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD Portal-
- Online application form.
- Full Resume/curriculum vitae in tabular form (max. 3 pages).
- List of publications (max. 5 pages), if applicable.
- Extensive and detailed description of the research proposal which has been agreed with both academic advisors- in the home country and in Germany – and a description of previous research work (max. 5 pages).
- Schedule of planned research work and visits from an academic adviser.
- Individual supervision agreement between the home university and the cooperating German University (Cotutelle contract). If this is not yet available at the time of application, it must be subsequently submitted before the grant-supported research begins.
- University degree certificates (e.g. Bachelor or Master)
- Transcripts of ALL university studies; make sure that individual grades are listed and to include the explanations of the grading system (which are usually on the back):
- Doctoral level transcripts (if applicable)
- Master’s level (or JD) transcripts (if applicable)
- Undergraduate transcripts
- DAAD language evaluation form (Sprachnachweis): If you have any knowledge of German, submit this document signed by a faculty member (professors or teaching assistants) of the German Department at your institution. If you have no knowledge of German and your study language in Germany is English, be sure to submit this certificate anyway, indicating that your study language is English, and write at the top “No knowledge of German.” (Please note that German is not a requirement). - Submit by email
- 1 signed reference form from a university professor in your major subject or discipline in a sealed envelope. Your reference must send a scan of the signed form via email to gradscholar-at-daad.org.
- The reference form is available on the DAAD portal, also called referee’s report.
If necessary, your referee may email the reference form to us directly.
Application Deadline: The application deadline is November 4, 2017.
