James Cook University (JCU) is offering postgraduate research scholarships for both domestic and international students undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR). The duration of a full-time Award is three years for a student undertaking Research Doctorate studies, and two years for a student undertaking Research Masters studies. The duration of a part-time Award is six years for Research Doctorate studies and four years for Research Masters studies. Recipients of awards are selected on the basis of academic merit taking into account the University’s particular areas of research strength and research training environment.

Eligibility: To be eligible for an Award, a student must:
-Have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent at First Class Honours level or equivalent;
-Be undertaking a HDR on-campus, unless formal approval has been granted for off-campus status;
-Be enrolled as a full-time student, unless the University has approved a part-time Award for the student (under the conditions outlined below);
-Be a domestic student (for APAs only);
-If undertaking a Research Masters Degree, not already hold a Research Doctorate or a Research Masters Degree or an equivalent research qualification, or if undertaking a Research Doctorate, not already hold a Research Doctorate Degree or an equivalent research qualification;
-Not previously have held an Australian Government-funded postgraduate research scholarship (excluding an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship), unless it was terminated within six months of commencement of scholarship payments; and
-Not be receiving an equivalent Award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the Award stipend rate to undertake the HDR. Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study is not subject to the 75% rule.
Scholarship Open for International Students: This postgraduate research scholarship is available for both domestic and international students.
Scholarship Description: JCU scholarships commencing in 2016 will be scored and ranked, and the process by which this will be undertaken. Competitive JCU scholarships are the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA), the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS), the AIMS@JCU scholarships and the JCU Postgraduate Research Scholarships (JCUPRS).

Duration of award(s): The duration of a full-time Award is three years for a student undertaking Research Doctorate studies, and two years for a student undertaking Research Masters studies. The duration of a part-time Award is six years for Research Doctorate studies and four years for Research Masters studies. The duration of an Award will be reduced by any periods of study undertaken:
-Towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Award;
-Towards the degree during suspension of the Award (unless the study was undertaken as part of an Australian Government financially supported international postgraduate research scholarship or award); or
-Previously while receiving an Australian Postgraduate Coursework Award.
What does it cover? The awards cover the candidate’s tuition fees and provide a living allowance, but do not cover personal health insurance or the JCU Student Services & Amenities (SSA) Fee. The value of an Award stipend over the full year is as follows: 25,849 for Full-time Stipend Rate ($AUD) and 12,924 part-time Stipend Rate ($AUD).

-Prospective JCU Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates must first have submitted their online application for candidature (i.e. entry to a JCU HDR program).
