University of Otago Academic Excellence Scholarships in New Zealand, 2016

University of Otago is offering academic excellence scholarships for students intending to enrol for full-time undergraduate study. Scholarships are awarded for New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school. For the first year of study at the University of Otago, the scholarship will normally consist of a full tuition fee waiver at the domestic fee status rate and a fee waiver for the full cost of accommodation in a University or University-affiliated residential college. The application deadline is 15 August, 2015.

Eligibility: Applications are open to students who:
-Are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents; or who have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school; and
-Are intending to enrol for full-time undergraduate study at the University of Otago for the first time in the year following the closing date.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Students from New Zealand can apply for these excellence scholarships.

Scholarship Description: Established by the University of Otago Council in 2011 to assist new undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic potential and leadership capabilities to attend the University of Otago. These scholarships are for students who have not previously been admitted to the University of Otago and who are planning to undertake undergraduate study in 2016.

Duration of award(s): The scholarship provides support for three years of undergraduate study.

What does it cover? 
-For the first year of study at the University of Otago, the scholarship will normally consist of a full tuition fee waiver at the domestic fee status rate and a fee waiver for the full cost of accommodation in a University or University-affiliated residential college. In instances where a recipient is not taking up the offer of accommodation in a University or University-affiliated residential college, the scholarship will consist of a full tuition fee waiver at the domestic fee status rate and a $5,000 contribution to general living costs;
-A payment of $10,000 for each of the second and third years comprising a tuition fee waiver at domestic fee status rate and a contribution to general living costs if tuition fees are less than $10,000 per annum.

Selection Criteria: The Selection Committee consisting of the Convenor of the Scholarships Committee , the Director of Marketing and Communications and the Scholarships Manager, or their nominees, and up to four further nominees of the Scholarships Committee, shall consider the following factors in recommending the award of the scholarships:
-Academic excellence (a minimum of NCEA Level 2 awarded with excellence, or equivalent, is required for consideration).
-Demonstrated leadership ability (this may be demonstrated through leadership in school, sporting, cultural and/or community settings).

How to Apply: Every applicant must:
-Submit an application to the University of Otago by the specified closing date.
-Arrange for a reference from their School Principal, Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal, Year 13 Dean or equivalent, to be forwarded to the University of Otago Scholarships Office by the required date.
-Attach to their application form, or authorise access to their most recent results in NCEA or equivalent.
-Provide details of involvement in activities at school, in the community and/or in sport in which they have shown leadership.
