Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award for International Applicants, 2016

Urology Care Foundation invites applications for research scholar award available for early-career investigators, enabling them to ignite their careers and advance urologic research. Awards are $40,000 per year for one or two years of support and require intensive involvement of one or more mentors committed to advancing the development of the Research Scholar. This award is not available to current residents in training. If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens but must have valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes.

Study Subject(s): Funding is available for research training in all urologic disease areas and across all research types: basic, translational, clinical, and health services/outcomes. Some awards focus on the following specific research areas: Interstitial Cystitis, Endourology, Pediatric Urology, Sexual Medicine and Urologic Oncology.
Course Level: Awards are available for research training (MD and PhD programme).

Eligibility: To be eligible to compete for a 2016 Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award, applicants must, by July 1, 2015, be either:
Track 1:
-Urologists in accredited clinical fellowships (eligible until the end of clinical fellowship);
-Research scientists who are post-doctoral fellows within five years of completing PhD; or
Track 2:
-Early-career MD or PhD (or equivalent degree) investigators within the first five years of beginning their faculty positions.
and for both eligibility tracks:
-Be able to commit to no less than one year of performance on the award and no less than 50 percent (for MD or equivalent degree applicants) or 100 percent (for PhD or equivalent degree applicants) of their time on their research projects. Deviation from this requirement will result in disqualification for award consideration or discontinuation of funding, should an award already have been made. MD applicant
All applicants will be required to indicate the track to which they are applying when they begin their online application submissions.
-Applicants cannot be a recipient of a previous Research Scholar Award, nor can the applicant have been the PI or Co-PI of any major independent investigator grant (e.g., NIH R01, DoD Idea Development). This award is not available to current residents in training. If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens but must have valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes.
-Neither the Urology Care Foundation nor the AUA Office of Research discriminate as to age, race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, citizenship or national origin in the employment and promotion of staff or in the selection of participants in the Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Applicants from all countries can apply for these awards (If the research is being conducted in the United States, applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens but must have valid Social Security numbers for Internal Revenue Service purposes).

Scholarship Description: The Urology Care Foundation, the official foundation of the American Urological Association (AUA), works to ensure the future of urologic health by supporting and improving the prevention, detection, and treatment of urologic diseases through research and education. The Urology Care Foundation has recognized a major need to encourage bright, young physician-scientists and researchers to dedicate their careers to improving patients’ lives through better understanding of the development and management of urologic diseases and conditions.

Number of award(s): At least 27 awards are available for the 2016 Research Scholar Award competition.

Duration of award(s): The awards are available for one or two years.

What does it cover? The awards are $40,000 per year as follows:
MD Scholars: The sponsoring institution for MD Scholars is required to match the Foundation’s $40,000 annual salary payment to the MD Scholar. For MD Scholars, the salary stipend match is intended for salary only and cannot include fringe benefits or direct or indirect costs.
PhD Scholars: The sponsoring institution for PhD Scholars must provide $40,000 in matching support for salary and/or requisite supplies and equipment to complete the research. For PhD Scholars, the salary stipend match may include fringe benefits. Details of the sponsoring institution’s plan for financial support should be provided in the application submitted by PhD Scholars. If the institution includes travel costs as part of the support, awardees must exhaust those funds and provide appropriate documentation of the expenditures before applying for additional travel funds from the Urology Care Foundation Scholar Travel Support Program.

Selection Criteria: All applications are evaluated by a peer review panel of expert physician-scientists and researchers. Each application is considered according to established criteria for determining merit as described below:
To what degree the applicant’s achievements (as reflected by awards, honors, previous publications, etc.) indicate his or her potential for a successful career in urologic research.
-To what degree the applicant’s stated career goals and the letters of support indicate a strong commitment to pursuing urologic disease research throughout his or her career.
-Whether the applicant’s proposed level of effort is appropriate for successful training and completion of the proposed work.

Notification: Awardees will be notified of funding decisions in writing via email. An initial communication will advise the applicant whether or not his or her application will be funded. Regardless of funding status, the applicant will be provided with a summary statement of his or her application’s review in a separate communication, typically within 30 days following the funding notification. Please note that results will not be given over the phone.

How to Apply: Applicants are responsible for composing, compiling, and submitting a complete application. Each applicant must have a primary mentor, who will be considered by the Urology Care Foundation to be the Principal Investigator (PI) for the project. Each mentor must provide a Mentor Letter of Support and complete the required mentor sections within the Application Agreement. Listing of consultants or co-investigators on the project is acceptable; the applicant should clearly describe the role of each member of the personnel on the project. The letter of intent should be submitted by e-mail.

Online Application

Scholarship Application Deadline: The letter of intent should be submitted by not later than August 12, 2015. The application package must be submitted by September 9, 2015.
