Cardiff University is inviting applications for Funded PhD studentship in chemistry. Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a 2:1 degree or higher in a relevant subject, such as Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other relevant subject. This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year). The application deadline is 17 September 2015.

Study Subject(s): Studentship is provided in Chemistry: Polymers for Solar Cell Applications at Cardiff University.
Course Level: Studentship is available for pursuing PhD degree level at Cardiff University.
Scholarship Provider: Cardiff University,  UK
Scholarship can be taken at: UK

Eligibility:-Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students without further restrictions.
-Academic criteria: Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a 2:1 degree or higher in a relevant subject, such as Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other relevant subject.
-Prior experience of computer simulations, whilst advantageous, is not required.

Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of UK/EU can apply for the studentship.

Scholarship Description: The high cost of solar cells based on silicon, has led to an intensive research effort into photovoltaic cells based on alternative materials, including conducting polymers. Solar cells based on organic polymers are cheap to fabricate, lightweight and flexible, as well as having a less negative environmental impact, but serious disadvantages from an operational point of view include their instability towards photo-chemical degradation and their low efficiency. However, it is considered that improvements in the efficiency of polymer-based photovoltaic cells are possible and prototype devices have already shown solar energy conversions of 8-10%.

Number of award(s): One studentship is available.

Duration of award(s): Studentship is offered for three years.

What does it cover? This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).

Selection criteria: Not Known

Notification: Not Known

How to Apply: In the first instance, you should submit a CV & Covering Letter to Prof. Nora de Leeuw atDeLeeuwN-at-cardiff.ac.uk. The successful candidate will then be invited to submit a standard application for Postgraduate Study via the Online Application Service. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible before the application deadline.
