Scholarship Provider:
The National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC)
Scholarship can be taken at:
USA

Eligibility: NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship. Those who already possess a doctoral degree are ineligible. Employers may nominate NPSC fellows directly, obviating the selection process. These fellows may enroll for either a Master’s or a PhD degree.

Scholarship Open for International Students: The fellowship is open to all American citizens.

Scholarship Description: The National Physical Science Consortium is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. NPSC’s member universities do not require fellows to pay tuition. Most government agency fellowships must cover all or part of tuition. Partly as a result, the total cost of an NPSC fellowship is roughly half what it costs a government agency to provide its own fellowships.

Number of award(s): The number of the award varies yearly.

Duration of award(s): Initial support may be for two or three years, or for a full six years, depending on the employer-sponsor. If the initial support is for the shorter period, it may be extended up to six years at the discretion of the employer.

What does it cover? Fellowship provides a $20,000 expense allowance; covering tuition; $6,000 for NPSC’s fee to support its operations; allowing a fellow also to hold a research or teaching assistantship; including one or two paid summer internships with a government agency; providing a mentor and the opportunity for a lasting relationship with the sponsor.

Selection Criteria: NPSC’s employers select fellows based the following factors, not in order:
-Whether the applicant’s field of study matches the employer’s needs
-Undergraduate and graduate course work and grades
-Research experience at a university or in industry
-Letters of recommendation from professors and employers. These can be decisive. The most effective letters are from persons who have supervised or observed the applicant’s participation in research.
-The GRE General tests are required; the Subject test is suggested and may be required by your university.

Notification: Not Known

How to Apply: The application should be made online. NPSC requires a minimum of three to a maximum of five letters of recommendation from professionals: professors and employers familiar with your work in your discipline. If at all possible, at least one letter should be from someone who has observed or supervised your participation in research. Provide your NPSC recommendation forms to your recommenders as early as possible. They suggest you provide your recommenders with a narrative of what you accomplished in class or employment with accompanying grades, research results, etc.
