Applications are invited for Menzies Scholarship available for Australian students to undertake postgraduate study. Two scholarships namely Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law for courses of study at UK universities, principally Oxford, Cambridge, London and Edinburgh and the Sir Ninian Stephen Menzies Scholarship in International Law for courses of study in international law at a prestigious overseas university. The awards will generally be tenable for one academic year only, although scholars wishing to enroll for longer courses may also apply. The application deadline is 30 August 2015.

Eligibility:
-Candidates must be Australian citizens, have been resident in Australia for at least five of the last ten years, and be available in person for interview in Melbourne at the time of selection in mid-October 2015.
-At the time of application, candidates must hold a law degree with an academic record in law that is equivalent to a First Class Honours Degree, normally from an Australian university.

Scholarship Description: The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation, a registered charity in Australia, is offering two postgraduate scholarships in law, the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law and the Sir Ninian Stephen Menzies Scholarship in International Law. Each is tenable at a prestigious overseas university. The scholarship program is partially supported by funds from the Australian Government. Both scholarships are awarded in memory of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Menzies, KT AK CH QC,Prime Minister of Australia from 1939 to 1941 and from 1949 to 1966. The Sir Ninian Stephen Menzies Scholarship in International Law is named in recognition of the outstanding achievements of Sir Ninian Stephen, KG AK GCMG GCVO KBE PC QC, as a justice of the High Court, Governor-General and international jurist. Sir Ninian served as Chairman of the Menzies Foundation from 1992 to 1998.

Number of award(s): Two postgraduate scholarships in law, the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law and the Sir Ninian Stephen Menzies Scholarship in International Law will be available.

Duration of award(s): The awards will generally be tenable for one academic year only, although scholars wishing to enroll for longer courses may also apply. Each award will be made on the understanding that it will be continued for the period for which it is granted, subject to the scholar’s satisfactory progress and conduct. Scholars will be required to provide a written report on their progress each six months to the Menzies Foundation.

What does it cover?
-Emoluments: Scholarships provide emoluments up to AU$75,000 per annum to meet compulsory university fees and charges and to contribute towards the cost of books, equipment, living and travel. Emoluments are not subject to income tax in the United Kingdom; taxation arrangements in other jurisdictions may differ.
-University and other expenses: (a) Tuition fees or a research grant equivalent, examination and other compulsory fees – subject to approval by the Foundation. (b) A grant of $200 towards the typing and binding of a thesis if required.
-Personal living allowance: Allowances will be determined by the Foundation to suit local circumstances in the country of study. As a guide, current allowances in the UK are £12,750 (if enrolled at a university outside London) and £14,750 (if enrolled at a London university) per annum, payable in three installments.
-Travel: (a) An economy airfare from Australia to the country of study. (b) A similar airfare to return to Australia, provided the scholar returns within 12 months of completing the course of study specified in the letter of award.

Selection Criteria: The scholarships in law will be awarded on merit to the persons who best meet the qualifications and qualities set out in the prospectus. The Selection Committee will take account of the proposed course of study, the academic achievement of the candidate, and also those qualities which Sir Robert Menzies held in high esteem. The qualities sought include:
i. Academic excellence
ii. Leadership, both proven and potential
iii. Interest and experience in the service of others
iv. Extra-curricular activities and interests
v. Ability to contribute to the life of the university.

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted online. Original or legally certified copies of documents such as Academic Transcripts or Naturalisation Certificate must be immediately available to the Menzies Foundation on request.
