HRB-TMRN PhD Scholarships in Ireland, 2018

Applications are invited for a PhD Scholarship in the Health Research Board-Trial Methodology Network (HRB-TMRN) to allow full-time research towards a Structured PhD.

The successful applicant will undertake a PhD project in the field of trial methodology specifically in the area of recruitment of pregnant women to randomised trials – the barriers and enablers for healthcare professionals.

The Scholarships are awarded for the purpose of assisting students who are entering a full-time PhD programme at NUI Galway. The holder may not simultaneously register for another course [apart from approved ‘transferrable skills’ modules of the structured PhD].

The ‘HRB-Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN)’ is a new, collaborative initiative between a number of Irish and international higher education institutes and methodology centres.

Scholarship Description:

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD programme.
Study Subject: The successful applicant will undertake a PhD project in the field of trial methodology specifically in the area of recruitment of pregnant women to randomised trials – the barriers and enablers for healthcare professionals.
Scholarship Award: The maximum value of the Scholarship Award student stipend will be €16,000 and plus a contribution towards project costs. Tuition fees (EU level) and the student levy will also be paid for qualifying students who are not in receipt of a Local Authority Maintenance Grant or equivalent. Also, see point 11f. The student will have access to a €12,000 travel grant, subject to performance (as assessed by the lead supervisor), to complete an international research visit at a trial methodology centre of excellence. The student will also have access to publication costs (up to €8,000). HRB-TMRN PhD Scholars also receive free access to all HRBTMRN training events.

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

Eligible Countries: Students from Ireland are eligible to apply.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a first class or a good upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an area relevant to the proposed field of research. To be eligible for the payment of the Scholarship, the holder must:

  • Be accepted for admission to the PhD degree;
  • Have completed, each year, the due registration procedures;
  • Have furnished complete information regarding grants, Scholarships, or other endowments held by him/her or for which he/she is eligible, and to notify of any change in respect of these as may arise in the course of their programme;
  • In all other respects have complied with the Conditions of the Scholarship.

English Language Requirements: Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting satisfactory scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

How to Apply:

  • PhD scholarship application form – Complete application form and submit a signed electronic version as e-mail attachment to [email protected];
  • Academic References– two references are required that indicate your academic suitability and potential to undertake postgraduate research;
    Fill out Section A with two copies of the Academic Reference Form and provide these to your referees.
    Each of your referees should then complete Section B of the Academic Reference Form and submit via email.
    Notes:
    References from proposed supervisors will not be accepted.
    It is the Applicant’s responsibility to ensure that references are submitted by the deadline.
  • References are supplied confidentially and are not made available to applicants at any stage during or after the competition.
